Here, you'll take white-knuckle rides down Class IV rapids, hike along trails in Roan Mountain State Park that rise over 5,000 feet in elevation, and cast your line amongst world-record trout in our trophy tailwaters. There's enough mountainous beauty, blue-water lakes, and rollicking rivers to satisfy any pioneer spirit. Up here, even the golf is breathtaking.

Boone Lake

Whether you enjoy water skiing, wakeboarding or simply taking in the gorgeous lake surroundings, Boone Lake is enjoyable for all ages and activity levels.

Buffalo Mountain Park


With a scenic overlook and 15 miles of hiking, Buffalo Mountain Park is a great destination to relax and rejuvenate your body and spirit. The park is also an excellent place to watch and admire birds and wildflowers. Also, enjoy the terrain with mountain biking through the park.

Buffalo Valley Golf Course


Buffalo Valley is a 6700 yard, par 71 golf course located just south of Johnson City, Tennessee. It offers challenging golf with breathtaking scenery from many elevated tee shots. The course is open year round and offers a full pro-shop, a practice green, and excellent facilities for outings! Golf lessons from PGA professionals are available. Tee times are required daily.

Pine Oaks Golf Course

Pine Oaks is a 6200 yard, par 71 golf course located in the heart of Johnson City and the mountains of Eastern Tennessee. It has long been considered a favorite of locals and visitors to Johnson City. Quality course conditions, low rates, scenic mountain views, and a course design suitable for golfers of all skill levels are but a few reasons for the tremendous popularity of Pine Oaks. The course is open year round and offers a full pro-shop and practice green. Golf lessons from PGA professionals are available.

Want to enjoy a warm night on Boone Lake? Check out Sonny's Marina, a full-service marina offering boat rentals and repairs. Sonny's is also home to Runabout Cafe, a local favorite for food, drinks, and live music throughout the week.

Winged Deer Park


Located on Boone Lake, this park offers disc golf, hiking, a tree arboretum and wooded nature trails.

Appalachian Trail


Though it hugs the North Carolina border for nearly 200 miles, the Appalachian Trail doesn’t officially cross into Tennessee until it reaches the Nolichucky River—at the Nantahala Outdoor Center (about four miles outside Erwin). On this section of the trail, elevations frequently exceed 5,000 feet.

Roan Mountain State Park


With breathtaking views of the Appalachian Mountain range and plenty of plant and animal life, Roan Mountain is a nature lover’s paradise. The park is home to the largest natural Catawba Rhododendron garden in the world, which comes alive every year in early summer. The park offers world-class hiking and some of the most beautiful scenery anywhere.

USA Raft


With a base camp in Erwin, USA Raft provides adventurers with an 8.5-mile journey down the deepest gorge in the east. Express trips and relaxed family paddling trips down the Nolichucky are also available.

Virginia Creeper Trail

Once the bed of a rugged mountain railroad, the Virginia Creeper Trail is a 34-mile journey through magical forest scenery. The trail is a favorite among hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders, and includes more than 100 bridges and trellises.

Watauga Lakeshore Resort & Marina


Located in Hampton just 20 minutes from Johnson City, this lake features public docking facilities, as well as picnic areas to accommodate beautiful boating scenery.
